About the Artist
Norbert Attard was born in Sliema Malta on October 4th 1951 and graduated in Architecture at the University of Malta in 1977. He lives in Malta where he practises his profession of architect and also that of artist and graphic designer in which he is entirely self-taught. Among Norbert Attard's numerous and most noteworthy artistic works one finds a growing collection of posters designed for various theatres national associations embassies and cultural institutions. On the same lines he has also designed a number of book covers and eight issues of Maltese postage stamps. Between 1978 and 1979 Attard lived in West Germany where his contacts with numerous European art galleries served a very useful purpose for upon his return to Malta he founded Gallerija Fenici together with other interested partners. Since his first experience in printing in 1967 Norbert Attard's enthusiastic involvement in the techniques of offset lithography has caused the high standards reached in this medium to receive ample recognition in Malta and abroad particularly the award of a scholarship to the Scuola Statale d'Arte in Urbino Italy. Other awards include 1st prize in the Bank of Alderney art competition 1966 Malta; 1st prize in the Malta International Trade Fair Poster Competition 1972 1974 1975; 'Primo premio di ricordo' at the Concorso Internazional d'Arte Palazzo Sforzesco Milan Italy 1977; and 2nd prize at the Concorso Internazional d'Arte 'Marco Pacuvio' in Brindisi Italy 1981. In 1983 Norbert Attard published a profusely illustrated collection of his lithographs in book form with a detailed study and commentaries by art critic and Museum-curator Dominic Cutajar. Editions of Attard's lithographs and silkscreen prints have been published by - amongst others - the Kunstverein Rhinelande u Westfalen Dusseldorf and Steintor Verlag Rudolph Judes (Master Suite European Graphics) Hanover in West Germany and of course CCA Galleries. Since 1975 Attard has held numerous one-man shows and participated in many collective shows throughout Europe. In the last two years Attard has concentrated entirely on silkscreen prints which he makes at Advanced Graphics in London.
