About the Artist
Born in Boston USA Sylvia Edwards studied painting and illustration in Boston at the Museum of Fine Arts School and the Massachusetts College of Art. She lived in Iran for fourteen years before moving to Switzerland and then London where she now resides. She draws on her wide travels as an illustrator and journalist as a source of inspiration for her paintings. Her work is richly decorative a quality she ascribes to her years spent in Iran in close appreciation of Islamic Art. She is equally clear about the influences of Klee Rothko Matisse and Milton Avery on her work. The Art critic Mel Gooding has written of her work: 'Broadly speaking there have been two aspects to Sylvia Edwards art: on the one hand there has been a persistent impulse to the sensuous celebration of the visible world; on the other a mystical even visionary tendency to a refined dream-like representation of symbolic figures engaged in an enigmatic spiritual drama'. An artist with a considerable and growing international reputation her work is represented in private collections in Britain USA Canada France Italy Holland Iran Egypt and Switzerland.
