Born in Piraeus, Achilles Droungas studied etching and stage scenery at the school of Fine Arts, Athens, from 1958 to 1965 with Constantine Grammatopoulos. With state scholarships he studied the popoular houses and traditional costumes of Western Macedonia (1966) and in 1970 he moved to London where he contined at the Slade School of Fine Art until 1973 under Alfred Goss. With another scholarship from the Ford Foundation he stayed in the USA (1976-77) where he studied the technique of lithography at universities and workshops like the Tamarind Institute.
He had his first one-man exhibition in Athens (1974). However, he had participated in group shows since 1965 in Greece and abroad.
In 1982 he painted a mural of 45 metres for the Athenaeum Intercontinental Hotel, Athens.
His work balances between critical realism and hyper-realism, assisted by techniques of optical illusion. He lives and works in Athens.
